Occoneechee Mountain is the highest point in Orange County at 867 feet and has been recognized as one of the most important natural areas in the Triangle region. The various habitats found on the mountain support species are both rare and significant. With 124 acres of land and nearly two miles of trails, visitors can experience a wide variety of the area's natural surroundings and wildlife. Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and is the only track remaining from the inaugural 1949 season. The site is now heavily forested in 40 year old pines and sycamores.
A 1-acre neighborhood park, located at 333 W. King St., that includes a kids playground structure, a footbridge, several garden areas and sitting benches. The park is owned and maintained by the Town of Hillsborough but was built primarily with volunteer donations.
The 24-acre Gold Park on Dimmocks Mill Road includes a multi-purpose field, playground equipment, picnic structures, a fenced dog park and a little less than half a mile of Riverwalk.
Riverwalk is a 1.5-mile greenway that will connect downtown Hillsborough with Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, off Orange Grove Road in western Hillsborough.
Murray Street Park is a neighborhood park that is owned and maintained by the town. It is located at the corner of Murray and Eno streets in West Hillsborough. The park is a little less than 1 acre and has an open area, a play structure and swings. A bridge also crosses a small creek to a sitting bench at the park.
Kings Highway Park is an 18-acre natural area located on Ben Johnson Road at the edge of the Hillsborough Extraterritorial Jurisdiction. It is owned and maintained by the town. Over the past few years, volunteers have built trails, bridges and a kiosk in the park. Kings Highway Park now has almost 1 mile of nature trails. The Town Board officially opened the park to the public May 2007.
Hillsborough Heights Park is a town-owned and -maintained tot lot located at 510 Terrell Road. The land was donated to the town, and playground equipment was installed on the lot in 2006. The neighborhood park also has two picnic tables and a grill. The park is open to the public during daylight hours.
The park consists of 41 acres, 25 of which are owned by the Town of Hillsborough, and 16 which are owned and maintained by Orange County. Currently, the park includes natural areas, a kids playground, and restroom facilities.
The Exchange Club of Hillsborough was chartered on June 19, 1947. Through the years the Club has been very active in community improvement projects. The primary focus of the Club has been with the youth of the community. In the Club's early years, members worked to improve the athletic facilities a the local high school.
