A Family Legacy: The Burwells and Women’s Education

HILLSBOROUGH, NC—The Burwell School Historic Site, 319 N. Churton St., presents a new temporary exhibit entitled,A Family Legacy: The Burwells and Women’s Education.The exhibit will be on display through December 2012 and explores the impact of the Burwell family on female education in 19th century North Carolina. The exhibit chronicles the family’s administration of the Burwell School, the Charlotte Female Institute (now Queens University), and Peace Institute (now William Peace University).

The exhibit includes biographies, photographs, family letters, school reports and other items related to each school and the family. The Burwell School invites you explore the far reaching legacy of the Burwells and discover how the family advanced women’s education in North Carolina.

Our business hours are Wed.-Sat. 11am-4pm, and Sun. 1-4pm. The exhibit and free docent-led tours will be available during these hours, and you can find our special event calendar listed on our website, www.burwellschool.org, or call 919.732.7451 for more information.
