A Brief Overview of 18th – 19th Century Miniature Painting in America,” given by Clifford T. Chieffo, Emeritus Distinguished Research Professor of Art, in the Art & Art History Department of Georgetown University and Curator Emeritus of the Georgetown University Art Collection.


 Professor Chieffo, well-known artist, art historian, lecturer, and author, has long held an interest in miniature portraiture.  With extensive research experience, he lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in conjunction with a major exhibition of American portrait miniatures in 1991.  Additionally, he served as moderator for the first panel discussion on miniature paintings for the College Art Association at the National Museum of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution.  In 1976-77, he was awarded a National Museum Act Grant to pursue scientific conservation research on American portrait miniatures.  In 1996, he was the alternate winner of the Rome Prize and was in residence at the American Academy of Rome researching Italian miniaturists who painted in America.
