Printing Nature’s Palette: An Introduction to Eco Printing with Willow Gatewood

September 10, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

| $60

Come learn how to capture nature’s palette using local plants! Join artist Willow Gatewood as they guide you through the process of eco printing, a technique used to “print” botanical designs and colors onto fabric, fiber, and paper with leaves, flowers, lichens, and other dye materials. This lesson serves as an introduction to the technique, and you will leave with prints on fabric and paper, as well as a guide for further exploration on your own.
Learn:
– How to print colors and patterns using plants and fungi.
– Fundamentals of natural dyeing, like mordants and modifiers.
– Identify and harvest common and local plants that produce rich colors.
– Safety, sustainability, and ethics in nature-based art.
Create:
– One silk scarf or handkerchief
– Unique papers (at least five: more as materials allow)
– Small cotton prints (for testing and experimenting)
*Feel free to bring your own fabric (cotton, linen, or silk), paper (heavy-weight paper, watercolor paper, or mixed media paper recommended). We can also experiment with old newspaper, tissue paper, pages from books, or papers you have already drawn on!
